UK government approves uplift in home undergraduate fees

Posted on 7 March 2025

An update on tuition fees for UK undergraduate students.

In November the Vice-Chancellor wrote to students to advise that the UK government had proposed an uplift to home undergraduate student fees and maintenance loans from August 2025. The government has now formally ratified the proposal.

The new annual fee amount of £9,535 for standard full-time courses will apply to home undergraduate students in all years of study at York from August 2025. Continuing students will be notified of your fee payment dates and how to make your payment in the usual way at the start of the academic year.

With the announcement on fees also came important news about increases to student maintenance loans in England. The government has published initial ‘what you need to know’ guidance about both increases, acknowledging the intense financial pressure that both students and universities have been experiencing.
