IT account and tools: get started guide for staff

Set up your account and explore digital tools to support your day-to-day work and research.

Get started checklist

1. Set up your IT account and password

Your account gives you access to your University email account and IT systems, including laptops, wifi, Google Workspace and printing.

  • Log into the York Identity Manager: Enter your username and initial password (these will be sent to your personal email address). Then follow the prompts to set up your account and choose a new password.

Your username is randomly generated – made up of three letters and a number – and unique to you.

2. Set up two-factor authentication (2FA)

We use two tools for authentication. Set them both up immediately to avoid access issues.

3. Connect to wifi

For laptops, tablets and phones on campus, connect to eduroam wifi

The first time you connect, you need to connect to the UoY Setup network and use the network setup tool. Then enter your username (eg abc123@york.ac.uk) and your password.

4. Stay cyber safe

Every year, staff are targeted by cyber criminals. Follow our steps to keep your information safe, avoid risks and strengthen your security wherever you are – on campus, at home and on the go.
