EDI Research Centre projects

Sustainable EDI futures
  • Investigators: Karisha Kimone George, Susannah Williams, Natalie Wall, Nicholas Pleace
  • Funders: Enhancing Research Culture, University of York

Project summary

This project sought to identify how we can stormproof UK HE EDI ecosystems (inclusive of research practice, process and management). It involved a scoping review of EDI information webpages, policy documents, videos, reports and other online materials that were publicly available from 28 UK universities, and interviews with Senior Leaders (2), Professors (4) and Professional Staff (6) from different HEIs.

Future directions

A launch event is scheduled for February to provide stakeholders with an overview of the framework and its recommendations. This event will generate the formation of a Steering group to support sector-wide change.

EDI protections policy brief

Project summary

This project explored the experiences of minoritised staff who perform EDI-related roles within UK HE. 61 interviews were performed with minoritised staff across over 12 UK HEs, and findings revealed high levels of exhaustion, disillusionment and disempowerment.

Project output

Future directions

The project has led to two strands of work which are currently underway: 1) the formation of an EDI minoritised staff forum which offers minoritised staff working in EDI in UK HE with opportunities for collaboration and support; and 2) the formation of an EDI protections Steering group whose remit includes lobbying for change in institutional operations specifically regarding integrating protections for EDI minoritised staff.

  • Investigators: Karisha Kimone George, Liz Wands-Murray, Linda Ko Ferrigno
  • Funders: Enhancing Research Culture, University of York

Project summary

Funded projects

Projects funded through the EDI Research Fund scheme

Within its EDI Research Fund scheme, the EDI Research Centre funded three research projects which prioritised EDI-informed research practice (inclusive research methods and methodologies), fostered EDI reflective practice, and focused on dismantling systemic inequities through and within research.

Developing a toolkit of best practice for the recruitment of disabled student participants in research
The Heela Project
Exploring International Postgraduate Taught (PGT) students' experiences of the dissertation process to identify opportunities to help student engagement

Project funded through the Pedagogical Research and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Collaboration Fund

In addition to integrating inclusive research methods and methodologies, this project brought together an interdisciplinary team of Teaching and Scholarship staff to develop an output that integrates EDI principles into our teaching practice here at the University of York.

Co-creation of staff and students guidelines on effective engagement with assessment feedback

Project funded through the Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) Funding Scheme

Jointly funded by the Administrative Fairness Lab.

The active involvement of the public in research practice is a pillar of research into societal issues. This was the impetus for our PPI funding scheme. The funded project supports the policy needs identified by the wider city of York, and aids the Centre in exploring how to maximise research impact in an EDI-informed manner.
