Current projects

The various funded projects together inform the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Research Centre's approach to develop a clear framework of how to incorporate EDI within research practices here at the University of York.

Ongoing projects

Equity in postgrad study
  • Investigators: Karisha Kimone George
  • Past co-investigators: Tom Murray, Abdulkabir Adenopo, Sophie Rojas, Tasmin Richardson, Scarlette Adams, Pearl Brewster, Nicole Frankel, Bethany Henderson
  • Funders: Enhancing Research Culture, University of York
  • Equity in postgrad study project website

Project summary

This project sought to reduce unequal access to postgraduate study by providing access to networks which can not just demystify, but also encourage these individuals to consider postgraduate education by:

  1. illustrating exactly what pursuing postgraduate study entails
  2. detailing the different pathways one can take to enter into postgraduate study
  3. providing practical advice and resources on how to pursue the different postgraduate options (Masters and PhDs)

It involved events alongside numerous social media initiatives such as #adayinthelifeofpostgradstudy.

Intended future actions

The project will host a new social media initiative focused on advertising the findings of the EDI Research Centre’s Faith in HE project.

ECR Collective
  • Investigators: Karisha Kimone George, Sharnel Wiggins, Georgia Capewell
  • Past co-investigators: Trish Chinzara, Noel Lam, Asha Akram
  • Funders: Enhancing Research Culture, University of York and the Psychology Department, University of York
  • ECR Collective website

Project summary thus far

The project set up a virtual community space for Early Career Researchers (this includes PGRs and anyone who is 10 years post PhD) across as many disciplines as possible within the Universities of the White Rose University Consortium. The resources located on the hub have been selected by ECRs and centre the experiences and needs of ECRs at various stages of their careers. Our ECR Collective events span all disciplines across the three universities, so each event is an opportunity to get to know fellow ECRs across the White Rose Community.

Intended future actions

The project will continue to provide opportunities for ECRs to connect with one another while supporting their wellbeing and career development. There will be approximately 4 events each academic year as we also continue to add to the resource bank.

Faith and HE
  • Investigators: Karisha Kimone George, Paul Wakeling
  • Funders: Enhancing Research Culture, University of York

Project summary

The project purchased a large-scale data set to explore the impact of faith on university student entry decisions (e.g. course and university selection) and graduate outcomes. It seeks to determine the impact of faith separate from ethnicity in order to isolate the potential protective role that faith may play in student university life.

Intended future actions

The quantitative data set analysis will be complemented by qualitative data collection in order to gain further insight into emerging findings. Findings will be disseminated through social media initiatives within the Equity in postgrad study project.

Upcoming projects

Intergenerational perspectives on EDI

Project investigators: Karisha Kimone George, Natalie Wall, Susy Williams, Nicholas Pleace

Project background

The project seeks to explore how different generations within academia perceive the role of EDI within their institutional functioning. It will also explore the perceived impact that EDI has had on day-to-day professional lives as well as research approaches and careers.

Intended output

Framework of structured guidelines

Intersectional racially minoritised female academic experiences

Project investigators: Karisha Kimone George, Natalie Wall, Gill Francis, Saba Joshi, Julia Sarju, Jennifer Leigh

Project background

The project seeks to examine how racially minoritised women working in academia (research roles as well as research enabling roles) have experienced academia including sources of support, responses to successes and mistakes, as well as perceptions of future career opportunities. The role of race will be compared to the impact of their additional minoritised backgrounds across these different areas.

Intended output

Toolkit of step-by-step recommended actions

EDI Research Centre podcast

The EDI Research Centre podcasts have multiple aims:

  1. To support others from minoritised backgrounds in understanding how their backgrounds can feed into their career advancement and career decision-making
  2. To highlight the impact that those from minoritised backgrounds are having within their institutions
  3. To explore how minoritised backgrounds impact careers and day-to-day life within academia
  4. To explore how researchers adopt EDI-informed strategies in their research and their recommendations for good practice in handling challenges involved in this work
