The Trusted Data Science Institute is a joint initiative between the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Mathematics at the University of York. Our mission is to advance the foundations and applications of trustworthy, transparent, and reliable data science.
Modern data-driven technologies influence every aspect of society - from health and environmental modelling to decision-making systems and artificial intelligence. Ensuring that these technologies are statistically sound, ethically robust, and mathematically well-founded is essential for maintaining public trust and scientific integrity.
Our research brings together expertise in statistics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and applied mathematics to develop data science methods that are not only powerful but also interpretable, stable, and fair. We study questions such as how uncertainty can be quantified and communicated, how algorithms can remain reliable under model misspecification or data shifts, and how complex systems can be designed to meet rigorous standards of reproducibility and accountability.
By combining theoretical insight with practical application, the Trusted Data Science Institute provides a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration - uniting researchers, students, and external partners who share a commitment to creating data science for the public good.
