King's Manor Library Study Space - Frequently Asked Questions
General
When will changes be taking place?
Changes to the King’s Manor Library space will be taking place from 9 June 2025. The last staffed King’s Manor Library service will be on 7 June 2025. The space will be temporarily inaccessible during the entirety of week commencing 9 June 2025 so that we can carry out essential collection and furniture moves.
We are aiming to reopen the study space from week commencing 16 June 2025.
Space
What will the opening hours for the King’s Manor Library space be?
The King’s Manor Library space will have the same opening hours as the general Campus opening hours. These are: Monday-Friday 07:30-18:00, Saturday 08:00-18:00, closed Sundays. Closure days due to holidays (e.g. Christmas) will be published in advance.
Will there still be a Help desk to go to at the King’s Manor Library?
No. From 16 June 2025 onwards the space will remain open as a self-service study space only. In person Library & IT Support can be found at the J.B. Morrell Library Helpdesk on main campus, Monday-Friday.
Will I still be able to study in King’s Manor?
Yes! Study space will still be available on the first floor of the King’s Manor Library. Additional step free study space is available via lift in the King’s Manor Common Room.
What will the study space offering look like?
Study space in the King’s Manor Library will look much the same as before with access to multi-user table spaces, individual study chairs, and access to sit-stand desks. The ground floor space will be unavailable.
What are the behaviour expectations for the space?
Please respect other users by keeping King’s Manor Library a Quiet study space. You are welcome to bring lidded hot or cold drinks and consume cold food in the space. We do not allow takeaways or hot food in the space.
There is a problem in the space (e.g. a power socket has stopped working, there is no heating). Who do I go to?
Building issues in the Library study space can be reported to the Campus Safety team at King’s Manor Reception.
Services
Will you still be delivering books to King’s Manor via the Book Delivery Service?
If you are a member of a department still based at King’s Manor for Academic year 2025/2026 (Archaeology/Stained Glass), you will be eligible to request books to be delivered to our Booklocker at King’s Manor.
The Booklocker is located across the courtyard and adjacent to the water fountain and toilet facilities. There are limited slots available in the booklocker so books will be available for pick up within 2 days once they are delivered.
Will you still be offering a pick up service of York Minster books to King’s Manor?
No. We no longer have a facility to offer this service. York Minster books can be requested to the Main Library or can be picked up from the York Minster directly, open Monday-Thursday 0930-1630 (closed one hour for lunch).
Can I request Interlending books to be delivered to King’s Manor?
No. Interlending items are the property of other institutions and do not interface properly with our Booklocker system in a way that means we can guarantee their security. We are therefore unable to offer delivery of Interlending books into the booklocker at King’s Manor. These items can be picked up at the main Library.
Will I still be able to return books I am finished with to King’s Manor?
Yes. You can return any of our books at King’s Manor. A book return point will be located on the first floor outside of the main King’s Manor Library study space. An alternative step-free book return point will be located next to the Booklocker.
Will I be able to borrow a laptop at King’s Manor?
Yes. A self-service laptop cabinet containing up to 20 laptops can be found in the Library Study space first floor entrance foyer. You will need your University card to borrow a device and they will be loaned to your Library account for up to 4 hours. Library devices only work on campus.
How do I return my laptop?
You return your laptop within the loan period to the same King’s Manor cabinet you borrowed it from. Please ensure you bring your University card with you, present it to the cabinet, and the correct bay will open. Please ensure you plug your device back and close the bay door firmly to ensure the laptop is removed from your account.
If there are issues with returning your device, please speak to a member of staff at King’s Manor reception on the ground floor by the entrance.
What will the general computer offering look like within the Library?
There will be no generally available desktop PCs or Macs available within the King’s Manor study space. Users are welcome to borrow a laptop or bring their own device. We will retain access to docking monitors and power points to plug in and charge devices.
You are welcome to use the Quick Print PC, located next to the printer in the first floor foyer to access files for printing - please do not use this for general browsing. Additionally, there will be access to a catalogue PC to search the Library catalogue.
Will there still be printing facilities available within the Library?
Yes. A printer is available in the first floor foyer of the Library study space.
I have an IT problem. Where can I get support now?
There will be no general IT Support provision at King’s Manor. You can get in person support in the main Library, Monday-Friday, or additionally you can email itsupport@york.ac.uk or phone 01904 323838 to speak to a member of the IT Support team.
Collections
What will be happening to the book collections at the Library?
The printed collections will be moved to Compact Store 2 in the main University Library. Texts marked as essential reading on current reading lists will be transferred to the appropriate subject area in the main library. We also intend to transfer any items loaned and returned through the book sorter to the main collection.
Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies and the Wormald Collection (including the Newton Collection and the Newbold Collection) will be shelved as discrete collections in Compact Store 2, University Library.
