Biomedical And Healthcare Technologies

The Biomedical and Healthcare Technologies group brings together experts from biology, chemistry, Hull York Medical School, physics, engineering and computer science to create life-changing medical devices and new technologies that deepen our understanding of human health.

Our research spans every stage of innovation, taking innovative ideas from early-phase laboratory research and turning them into real-world medical tools. However, we don't work in isolation. We collaborate directly with patients, caregivers, clinicians, decision-makers and industry, ensuring that our research is designed around real human experiences, and our technologies address everyday needs and improve lives around the world.

Areas of particular strength are:

Imaging and sensing: We build advanced analytical tools using artificial intelligence (AI), light, electronics, and sound. These technologies not only provide insight into the fundamental mechanisms of disease but also help clinicians to diagnose illnesses and infections earlier and more accurately and choose the right treatment for each patient at the right time. We also develop methods for analysing large volumes of complex, biological data allowing us to reveal subtle but biomedically important phenomena.

Treatment and rehabilitation: We design cutting-edge therapies that range from treatments engineered at the cellular and molecular level to target specific diseases, to AI-assisted robots that support surgeons during operations. We also research virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) to simulate human movement, helping stroke survivors and people with osteoarthritis regain their mobility.
