Postgraduate accommodation at York

Quick links

Introduction

All University accommodation is situated on or within walking distance of the campus and is conveniently located for the centre of York.

Full time postgraduate students from outside of the British Isles and EU are currently provided with accommodation for the duration of their full-time course, provided they apply by the due dates.

Students from within the British Isles and EU normally live in private sector accommodation unless they provide documentary evidence from an appropriate professional that there is a medical or other reason why they should be given priority for University accommodation.

Applications for University accommodation for 2010/11 will be on-line through eVision.

University residences

Wentworth College is the Graduate College at the University but all other Colleges with the exception of Vanbrugh College have some accommodation for postgraduate and undergraduate students. Please see the college website for further details

The University also provides accommodation in off campus residences situated in and around the City centre for postgraduate students. Walmgate and Constantine are especially suitably located for students studying at Kings Manor.

For 2010/11, there is an on-line accommodation application and contract acceptance system for new full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students with the exception of students applying for couples/family accommodation.

If you have any particular worries or queries about accommodation, do not hesitate to get in touch with the Accommodation Office - the staff will be only too pleased to help you. Please be sure to quote your student reference number and full name in any correspondence.

Only students eligible for University accommodation will have access to apply online. Please see below for information on who is eligible to apply.

How to apply - information for...

Accommodation – for students paying OVERSEAS tuition fee rates

If you live outside the British Isles and EU and are liable to pay the overseas tuition fee rate, you are guaranteed University accommodation if you accept an unconditional offer and apply for accommodation by 17 August 2010.

This means you should send any required/outstanding documents, relating to the conditions in your offer, to the Graduate Schools Office by 10 August 2010 in order for them to be processed in time.

If you apply after this date, we will continue to assist you but do not guarantee to offer you University accommodation.

The online application system opens on Wednesday 28 April 2010 and you will have access to apply via eVision once you have accepted an unconditional offer of a course place.

  • The application system is a ‘first come, first served’ system. You should apply for accommodation as soon as you have access to the system.
  • The system opens on Wednesday 28 April 2010. Overseas students who have accepted an unconditional offer will be able to apply for accommodation from this date.
  •   It is in your interest to make an application as soon as possible after you have accepted your unconditional offer of a place on your course. When you apply you will be choosing from the options available at the time you apply. The later you leave it, the fewer options there will be.
  • If you are applying after July, you will be required to enrol online in evision before you can select the accommodation application option.
  • If you apply before August, you should go back into evision in August to enrol online. If you do not enrol online before you arrive, you are likely to encounter delays in collecting your keys on your arrival. All students are expected to have enrolled before they move in to University accommodation.
  • You will be able to select the College and room type from the options available at the time you apply. These are important choices. Please make sure you research the options carefully before applying. (You will only be able to see the options available at the time you are applying).
  • The option for let length is set at 51 weeks as nearly all postgraduate courses are for 51 weeks. If you are on a course for a different let length, you should give the dates in the free text box on your online application form.
  • Information on the rent bands is available here.
  • You will be able to indicate some lifestyle preferences (e.g. quiet area) when you apply. Wherever possible these will be taken into account when allocating you a bedroom.

Accommodation - for students paying HOME tuition fee rates

Priority for accommodation is given to students living outside the British Isles and EU and paying the higher overseas tuition fee rate. Subject to availability, students from the EU will be given priority for accommodation over home postgraduate students. However, there is no guarantee that EU postgraduates will be able to apply for University accommodation.

All home postgraduate students normally live in private sector accommodation and it is very unlikely they will be able to apply for University accommodation unless they have a medical condition or other reason for being given priority.

Private sector accommodation

All Home students and some EU students will live in private sector accommodation. York has a surplus of rented accommodation for student and there were properties still available last year after all the postgraduate students had found private sector accommodation.

The Accommodation Office advertises properties which comply with the Code of Best Practice. You will have access to these advertised properties online.
