Question, why do interdisciplinary research and what to consider if you do it?

This workshop from YESI is an opportunity for anybody who is currently doing interdisciplinary research, or thinking about it, to consider some of the most fundamental issues related to this mode of working. In the session we will explore the following:

1) What has been your experience of interdisciplinary research?
2) How important is career stage in terms of informing experience?
3) Why do it?
4) What might be the risks or the downside of going down the road of interdisciplinary research?
5) What lessons can we learn from each other’s experiences?

We are keen to involve participants from all career stages – PhD to Professor – and keen to hear about your own, individual story of interdisciplinary collaboration. By the end of this workshop we hope that you will have had the space to reflect upon your experience of interdisciplinary work and share your insights with others, including those who are just starting out on their interdisciplinary journey. We hope participants will discover new ways to approach interdisciplinary research and effective ways to address potential challenges in interdisciplinary research.

This session will be introduced by Professor of Medical Humanities and Social Sciences, Des Fitzgerald who has written extensively about his own experiences of interdisciplinary research in sociology and neuroscience.
