New developments in AI hold immense potential for transforming the way we collect, handle and analyse environmental data. The increased ability to process complex datasets and model detailed scenarios that AI provides can serve as a powerful tool to address global environmental challenges, an opportunity that has been highlighted by NERC and the Alan Turing Institute and where funding opportunities are anticipated from UKRI. Whilst this is an increasing focus of activity and funding however, the application of this evolving technology poses important questions about suitability, safety, and ethics that need to be considered to avoid creating unsuitable solutions or new problems.

Building on key York research strengths, this roundtable hosted by YESI , ISA, CfAA and SAINTS CDT will outline the opportunities and challenges posed by the use of AI in environmental science. It will seek to stimulate discussion between environmental scientists and AI/data scientists and identify areas for future, challenge-focussed workshops to drive forward new research collaborations.
