Event details

Advances in AI and machine learning hold huge promise to revolutionize practice in biodiversity and conservation management and our approaches to understanding and protecting the natural world - but to do so, interdisciplinary collaboration between ecology, social sciences and AI communities is crucial.

This joint workshop between YESI and the Institute for Safe Autonomy aims to bring together researchers with a diverse range of expertise and interest in biodiversity and AI/machine learning, to explore the exciting interdisciplinary and cross-institutional collaborations we can make moving forward.

Topics to be covered include the use of AI for image and sound identification, analysing remote sensing data (wildlife distributions, vegetation maps etc), challenges around 'kite marking' real field collected data (vs AI generated data sets) and the safe, unbiased and ethical use of AI analysed data for predictions, decision and policy making.

Researchers (inc PGRs) interested in (but not necessarily currently studying) AI, machine learning, conservation and biodiversity management are welcome to join.

This workshop will be the first of several looking to help develop a shared language and spirit of co-creation between experts in AI and environmental sustainability. Please contact robyn.inglis@york.ac.uk if you have ideas for topics for future workshops.
