Scholarship details

What is the award for?
The Joan Samuels Scholarship offers two awards of £1,000 to help postgraduate students meet costs arising from their disability that affect their ability to study or take part in university life. This may include disability-related living costs, travel, equipment or practical support during their current programme.

Eligibility

Open to International (including EU), International (non-EU) and UK (home) students.

The scholarship is open to those studying either full-time or part-time students.

To be eligible, you must:
  • have a disability, and
  • be currently fully-registered on a degree-awarding postgraduate programme, for a duration of at least one full year. 
How to apply

Application deadline: Friday 30 October 2026, 12am GMT

Apply by completing this Google form.
The application form will take 10 to 15 minutes to complete. Your progress will be automatically saved, so you may leave and return before submission. In your application, tell us what you would use the award for, the approximate cost, and how it would help you. You do not need to provide a detailed medical history or supporting documentation.  
How we allocate
Disability Services review the applications. Eligible applications will be assessed on how clearly they explain the disability-related need, how the proposed use of the award would address it, and the difference the award would make to the applicant’s studies or participation in university life. We will also consider whether the proposed costs are clear and proportionate to the £1,000 award.  


Applicants will not be assessed on the severity of a diagnosis.

The successful candidate will be notified no later than Friday 7 November 2026.
