Things to know this week - 9 January 2023

Posted on 9 January 2023

Welcome to Spring Term 2023! Here is your undergraduate student news summary of key things happening this week.

UoY community update

Feeling unwell? Look out for these key symptoms
In a large community, we need to be vigilant about infectious illnesses and you may have seen in the news the prevalence of Covid, flu and Strep A. Whilst most common illnesses improve with rest and painkillers, you should be aware of symptoms where you may need further medical help. Look out for symptoms like:

  • High temperature
  • Rash
  • Sore throat
  • Aches

We recommend that you are up to date with vaccinations against Covid, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) and meningococcal MenACWY vaccines.

If you feel unwell, let someone know and stay at home. Seek medical advice if your symptoms get worse. See our information on infectious illnesses or get advice from the NHS website.

1. Exam week

Many students are taking exams this week. Our information on taking an exam, including what to bring to an exam, will help your experience go more smoothly. It is perfectly normal to feel stressed in the lead up to or during an exam but, if it starts to feel too much, read our exam stress advice for tips on how to calm yourself during an exam.

2. Want to live on campus next academic year?

The accommodation booking system for existing undergraduates wanting to live on campus for 2023/24 opens today. Whilst we have significantly increased the number of rooms available to returning students this year, University-managed accommodation is limited and not guaranteed to continuing students. Demand for these rooms is very high so we advise you to book campus accommodation for 2023/24 early.

3. “[It] was a really good match and we have become really good friends”

Student Connect has reopened for Spring Term. Get matched with either one person or a group of people in your department or college and expand your uni network. You’ll also be invited to bespoke social events. Sign up for Student Connect.

4. Global opportunities in 2023

The deadline for undergraduates applying to study abroad in 2023/24 is on Friday (13 January). For inspiration, read about our current students’ experiences of study abroad in places like Germany, Hong Kong and New York City and check out where you might go on our study abroad web pages. Undergraduate finalists can also apply for the ACU Summer School in South Africa.

If you’re looking for global opportunities in York this year then there are several chances to practise your language skills and learn about different cultures. Online International Conversation Afternoons (ICA) take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays or come along to the first meeting of the Languages Cafe this Wednesday (11 January).

5. YorkTalks 2023: what’s your lecturer working on?

From The Mandalorian to insect biotech; from phobia treatments to the Ukrainian Cossack. Join us at YorkTalks 2023 on Wednesday (11 January) for a rollercoaster journey through a series of free short talks highlighting the breadth and depth of the fascinating research underway at York. Book for one or more sessions and see what York academics are working on.
