Changes to overnight support on campus

News

Posted on Friday 5 June 2026

The way you receive support on campus overnight is changing. From Saturday 13 June 2026, if you need help on campus overnight, instead of going to a reception, staff will now come to you.

Previously, for common out-of-hours issues, such as getting locked out of your room on campus, you had to make your way in the dark over to a reception either in the Information Centre or the Ron Cooke Hub to get a temporary card made.

So what if instead help came to you?

From Saturday 13 June, that’s exactly what will happen.

Who to contact overnight on campus

We’re investing in Campus Safety to provide a more efficient and effective service, ensuring staff are available when they are needed most to make the safest campus on which to study, work, live and visit.

Contacting Campus Safety

From Saturday 13 June, if you need help on campus between 11pm and 7am, simply contact Campus Safety and the mobile patrol will come to help. You can contact Campus Safety in a variety of ways:

- By phone on +44 (0)1904 32 4444
- Via the dedicated Safe Havens available in all colleges
- Via the SafeZone app

What differences will students see?

From 13 June, our campus receptions will no longer open overnight, though they will still be open from 7am until 11pm every day.

Out mobile patrol is a safer and more discreet approach for common issues such as campus accommodation lock outs - students don’t have to walk across campus in the dark to receive help.

We're increasing the number of Campus Safety staff and the refocus allows for more patrol time on campus during the day, increasing from 20% to 50% of overall Campus Safety staff time. This allows officers to be around and visible when the campus is busiest, providing reassurance to students, staff and visitors.

What if I don’t have my phone with me to call for help?

A simple way to contact Campus Safety is to phone +44 (0)1904 32 4444 or use the SafeZone app.

However, if you don’t have your phone with you, each college has a Safe Haven intercom.

By pressing the Safe Haven intercom button, you’ll dial into the Campus Safety Control Room and will be immediately advised of a safe place to wait, such as a kitchen or common reception area, and how long the responding officer will be.

You will be visible to the Control Room via CCTV camera so you won’t be alone.

Supporting our staff

The change represents an investment in staff at the University. There will be an increased number of Campus Safety officers overall from 24 to 36 - equating to an increase of 20,000 extra patrol hours per year.

Staff will also be supported with increased training to industry standards, mental health first aid training, and a career pathway to allow officers to continually develop and provide an exceptional level of service.
