How NOT to fall for a phishing scam

Phishing attacks are more prevalent at the start of term - would you be able to spot one?

Examples of phishing attacks currently circulating include emails purporting to be from the Student Loans Company or from the University, asking students to provide details to receive a loan or bursary.

It's vital that you are alert to this and wary of emails that:

  • ask for personal information
  • direct you to websites that request personal information or require you to log in

IT Services top tips for avoiding scammers

  1. Know the risks of falling for a phishing attack
    • You could lose access to your account
    • Your email account may be used to send spam or offensive email
    • You could lose money

  2. Choose a strong password, and keep it safe
    Your password protects your account; don't share it, and don't use the same password for different accounts.

  3. Don't assume that all emails or websites are genuine
    Check carefully before you give out any information.
