Avoid cycling fines - and get cashback!

Posted on 21 January 2015

Students can claim £10 cashback when they attend a free cycle training session.

Cashback for training

A course to encourage safer cycling is being endorsed by the University through a cashback scheme.

Students who pass a cycle training scheme can claim £10 cashback from the University’s Travel and Transport team.

The free 90 minute course helps cyclists to brush up on cycle skills and boost confidence on the road and is aimed at both beginners and more advanced cyclists.

Cycle safe at York

The University works hard to promote cycle safety and, fortunately, there have been no accidents as yet on campus.  We want that to continue.

Fiona Macey, Sustainable Travel and Transport Manager

Recent incidents on campus suggest some cyclists do not know the legal requirements of urban cycling.  Students risk a £50 on-the-spot fine for offences such as cycling in the dark without lights, cycling on the pavement, or cycling through a red light.

Fiona Macey, Sustainable Travel and Transport Manager, says that the course is a great refresher for cyclists and will help keep everyone safe.

“We have received recent reports of incidents on campus, including near-collisions between motorists and cyclists due to cyclists not being visible during dark afternoons.  It is the law that cyclists should have front and rear lights on when cycling in the dark.

The University works hard to promote cycle safety and, fortunately, there have been no accidents as yet on campus.  We want that to continue.”

Light up, Be Seen

Cycle safety is a priority for the University.  Fiona’s team promotes an annual ‘Light up, Be seen’ campaign, giving out free lights and high visibility jackets to students, as well as supporting the Cycle Alert tag scheme that alerts Unibus drivers that cyclists are near.

Students interested in participating in the training scheme and qualifying for cashback should email transport-team@york.ac.uk to book a place on the next available session.
