The following scholarship opportunities are available for the 2018/19 academic year:

Maria Bourboulis

Maria Bourboulis EU/UK masters scholarship 2018/19


Type: MA
Location: York, UK
Funding for: UK/EU Students and international students
Funding amount: £12,000 stipend p.a. (This does not include a fee waver)
International students are eligible; however, they will be expected to show evidence that they can compensate for the difference between the Home/EU student fees and the International student fees. 
Start Date September 2018
Time: Full Time for one year

The Maria Bourboulis scholarship fund is awarded in memory of York Alumna Maria Bourboulis – to continue to support Sociology students.

Applications are invited from highly qualified and motivated applicants to take up this new MA scholarship opportunity in the Department of Sociology at the University of York.

Eligibility and availability

In order to be eligible you must:

  • Have applied for place a on a full time Masters course on one of the following courses:
  • MA in Social Research
  • MA in Criminology and Social Research
  • MA in Social Media and Social Research
  • MA in Society, Culture and Globalisation
  • Begin your Masters studies in September 2018
  • Have or expect to obtain a first or upper second class honours degree or equivalent prior to commencing the Masters programme.

English language

If English is not your first language you should also read the English Language requirements 2018/19 for postgraduate study for each department.

Allocation process

Candidates are selected on the basis of academic excellence. We anticipate that decisions will be made by the middle of July 2018. We expect to contact successful candidates by the end of July 2018.

Application procedure

First, to apply for the scholarship, you will need to submit a formal Masters application through the University’s online application system

Application documents include a personal statement, a CV, previous degree certificates, academic transcripts and one reference letter. Please explain in your personal statement why you would like to undertake a MA/ MSc in our department at York and how the scholarship would be useful for you to achieve your goals. 

Please indicate on your application documents that you intend to apply for The Maria Bourboulis MA Scholarship.

Second, you must also submit a separate copy of your application to the Department of Sociology (

N.B. If you have already applied for a MA/ MSc with us, you can write to us and tell us that you would like to be considered for the scholarship. Please provide a short additional text about the usefulness of the scholarship in order to achieve your goals. 

Terms and conditions

Successful candidates will be sent a formal letter confirming the offer of the Scholarship. The letter sets out the value and duration of the award. The letter asks candidates to accept the Terms of the Scholarship.

For scholarships with stipends
Award holders receive the balance as a cash bursary that will be paid directly into their preferred bank account.

For all scholarships and studentships
Continued receipt of all Scholarship is conditional upon satisfactory academic progress. Scholarship holders should notify their Department in the following circumstances:

  • you take leave of absence
  • you change your programme of study
  • your registration status changes (e.g. Full time to part time)
  • you withdraw from your programme

Chevening Scholarship

There are a number of scholarships for international students to receive funding via a Chevening scholarship.

Chevening/University of York Partnership Award (for students from China)

Eligible students applying to our MA culture, Society and Globalisation may apply for a joint-funded Masters scholarship in collaboration with Chevening.

If you wish to be considered for this award you should select the University of York as your first preference in your Chevening application.
