Why does Aspire Together exist?

Parents/carers/guardians are highly valued by students in helping them make informed decisions about higher education. However, many do not feel empowered to support their child/ward with the process of looking at higher education options, and may have concerns such as:

  • how does the system work?
  • how much will it cost me?
  • how do I know that this course will lead to a job?
  • what does that course mean?
  • will they cope away from home?
  • will they be safe?
  • which higher education institution has the best facilities?
  • how can I help my child/ward when I don’t know how to?
  • where do I start to find out information about university?

During the 2022/23 academic year, students from the University of York, along with the Access and Outreach team, conducted interviews with parents and carers in Bradford to explore thoughts and attitudes towards higher education. Themes from these conversations have been used to inform, design, and develop the Aspire Together events.

Throughout this academic year we will be hosting events online, in Bradford and at the University of York campus, to provide support and information to help parents/carers/guardians feel informed and empowered when supporting their young person with their higher education aspirations.

Sign up to our quarterly newsletter to hear more about the events we'll be running.
