Postgraduate research funding

Your chosen course, level of study and other statuses may all affect your eligibility for the opportunities listed here.

Some of the funding options below are part of Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs). These offer unique opportunities for postgraduate researchers, including specialised research training and professional development skills.

We regularly receive funding for PhD projects from research councils the Economic and Social Research Council, Medical Research Council, Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, charities, the EU, and private companies. Funding normally covers research costs and tuition fees, and provides a maintenance grant for living expenses. Some PhD projects already have specific funding allocated to them (eg, from a grant). In other cases, supervisors do not have pre-arranged funding—these students can enter the departmental studentship competition.
