Investigating the effects of COVID-19 and long COVID on the brain

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to widespread neurological and cognitive issues in many people, with 'brain fog' being a common complaint among those with both acute COVID-19 and long COVID. Despite its prevalence, the nature and cause of this cognitive impairment are not well understood. This talk will outline a series of studies that investigate the effects of COVID-19 and long COVID on memory and brain function. Using a multi-modal approach, we employed both behavioural and neuroimaging techniques, including electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), to characterise the cognitive and neural changes associated with these conditions. Our findings provide insight into the mechanisms underlying COVID-19-related neurological symptoms and their long-term impact on the brain.
