Early careers researchers

Supporting early career researchers is vital to the future of the field.

In the Department of Psychology, we empower emerging scholars to develop innovative research and build academic independence in order to shape the next generation of psychological insight.

The role of the Early Career Researchers (ECR) Champion is to serve as an advisor and advocate for ECRs within the department. This is primarily accomplished through:

  • supporting the activities of the ECR Forum
  • assisting in the development of new programmes or events designed to enhance the department's research culture.

I am committed to cultivating a research culture that ensures Early Career Researchers feel welcome and supported, alongside promoting the progression of their research programmes. I firmly believe in the importance of student involvement in their own training and professional development, and I highly value the professional relationships established with students through my service as the department's ECR Champion.

What is the Early Career Researcher Forum?

The ECR Forum is organised and led by researchers in the early stages of their careers: from PhD students and RAs to postdocs, teaching fellows, and first-position lecturers.

Every academic year the Forum organises a dynamic and responsive programme of events aimed at providing support and training for ECRs, and broadly enriching both professional and social life in the department. Some events recur annually, while others are organised in response to students identifying new training needs.

Activities

Below is an overview of ongoing initiatives and projects dedicated to supporting early careers researchers (ECR).

  • ECR workshops and training

Aims: The ECR Forum runs workshops each semester, which provide training that is relevant to ECRs. The sessions cover a wide range of topics, from navigating careers (both within and beyond academia) to mastering paper writing and using social media effectively.

  • Seminars and meet the speaker

Aims: The Department organises seminars weekly throughout semester-time. For some of these seminars, the ECR Forum organises a 'meet the speaker' session prior to these talks. These provide the opportunity for ECRs to connect with presenters and discuss research, career trajectories and professional advice.

  • ECR social events

Aims: The ECR Forum organises social events throughout the year so that ECRs have an opportunity to relax and spend time with each other in a more informal setting.

  • ECR outreach

Aims: The ECR Forum is heavily involved in public outreach: sharing our science with members of the general public. In particular, we organise 'PsychYork', part of the York Festival of Ideas

Communication

The ECR has an email list to which we advertise all of our events and useful information. To be added to the list, please contact the ECR Forum Committee (see below).

If you would like more information, have ideas about events to run or have some issues to raise then please get in touch.

The ECR committee meets once per semester to organize the events for the following semester and discuss any issues that may have arisen. The dates/times of these meeting are usually communicated through the ECR mailing list a few days in advance. If you are not in the committee but have something to say, you can get in touch with the ECR Chair ahead of the meeting and they will ensure to include the discussion in the meeting agenda.

ECR Forum Library

The ECR has a small library of useful textbooks for loan.  We have books on Matlab, R, event-related potentials and structural equation modelling.  You’re welcome to borrow the books - just sign them out on the accompanying sheet.  The library is currently looking for a new home so please get in touch if you’d like to borrow anything. Get in touch with the ECR Forum Committee (ecr-forum-committee-group@york.ac.uk) if there are texts that you think we should acquire. We’re also open to donations of books.
