Martingale Foundation Scholarship

Martingale Foundation Scholarships are available for students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, who want to pursue a Masters or PhD in Mathematical Sciences.

Applications for 2027/28 will open on Wednesday 12 August 2026 and close on Sunday 18 October 2026, 11.59pm BST.

The Department of Mathematics at the University of York is pleased to partner with the Martingale Foundation to support a new generation of postgraduates to thrive in research.

Through fully funded scholarships and access to a community of pioneering leaders, Martingale enables and nurtures talented individuals from low-socioeconomic backgrounds to excel within world-leading postgraduate research.

  • A fully-funded scholarship to pursue a Masters or PhD at one of Martingale Foundation's partner universities, including the University of York
  • All tuition fees and research expenses, including a tax-free stipend set according to the Living Wage Foundation
  • Tailored university application support that covers the application process
  • A comprehensive professional development programme that includes leadership training and connections with top academic and industry professionals
  • Membership of a prestigious research community.

Eligibility

Open to UK (home) students only.

Open to students wishing to study in the Department of Mathematics who want to pursue an MSc in Mathematical Sciences or a PhD in Mathematics (for PhD projects in the areas of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Physics).

Martingale are looking for candidates who have the academic potential and motivation to undertake postgraduate research, while contributing to the cohort of Martingale Scholars.

If you have refugee status and are eligible for Home Fee status, you are eligible to apply even if you do not meet the minimum requirements for education history in the UK or Ireland.
