Article Galaxy Scholar

Article Galaxy Scholar (AGS) is a paid service funded by Faculties. It provides journal articles immediately when other routes, such as Interlending, are not suitable—for example, for urgent use in a time-sensitive funding application.

Staff can access AGS through YorSearch. If an article is not available in full text, the AGS option will appear alongside the Interlending link.

What is available via AGS?

AGS does not cover all academic literature. The library subscribes to select journals from Elsevier, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Taylor & Francis, Sage, Wiley, and Springer Nature - if an article from one of these publishers is not available in our subscriptions, York staff can request it via AGS.

Getting started with AGS

AGS is accessed via YorSearch, the library catalogue. You will usually find it one of two ways: either by starting off within YorSearch, or by being directed there from a publisher's website or via LibKey Nomad. In either case the links to AGS will only appear for staff, which means you'll need to log in to YorSearch to use it.

Accessing AGS when starting from YorSearch

  1. Search for the article you want in YorSearch, then in the top right of the screen under Refine my results toggle the switch to 'Include results where no full text'
  2. Under the relevant article, click No full text or Check for available services
  3. You will then be taken to the item record for the article. Under How to get it you'll be be able to log-in if you haven't already (this step is essential); you can then choose Purchase via Article Galaxy Scholar (there is also the option at this point to request the article via Interlending, which may be more appropriate due to the £30 cost for each use of AGS - see below)
  4. Click the Purchase PDF button: you’ll be redirected to the purchase page in AGS. You should receive an email of the PDF within a couple of minutes once your purchase is complete

Accessing AGS when searching via a publisher's platform or LibKey Nomad

If you follow a ‘Find Full text via YorSearch’ link from the website of any of the publishers listed above, and it’s an item not provided by the Library or via open Access, you’ll see the option to purchase the article in YorSearch. If you’re using LibKey Nomad and the item on the publisher site isn’t available via the Library, you’ll see ‘Access Options’ which will direct you to YorSearch as above. In either case, you can then proceed to Step 4 above.

AGS or Interlending?

Interlending is the free service supplied by the library to provide access to articles from journals to which we don't subscribe. You can access it via the Tell Us What You Need page (always linked from the top of YorSearch), and articles are typically provided within 24 hours. The expectation is that staff will use Interlending for the vast majority of article requests, because it is free to use.

Article Galaxy Scholar is paid for at a Faculty level, and costs £30 for every article supplied. As such it is for use in specific situations where Interlending is unsuitable - these may include time-sensitive research relating to a grant application, or a need for more articles from one issue of a journal than copyright rules allow under normal circumstances. Whilst other Universities often put a cap on usage (for example 5 articles per Semester via AGS) we are keen to avoid this if we can - however use of AGS is monitored and recorded due to the high cost so please only use it in situations where Interlending is not an option. If your request is not urgent, Interlending is the option to choose.
