Google Meet

Eligibility

All staff and students at the University of York can access this service.

Google Meet (previously called Hangouts Meet) offers a simple way of conducting video meetings, as well as screen sharing (for presentations etc):

  • Create meetings with up to 100 participants

You need a Google account to start a meeting but the other participants don't need an account to join a meeting. This makes it easy to conduct video meetings with people outside the University who may not have a Google account.

Participants can join using the Google Chrome and Firefox web browsers or the Android and iOS mobile apps. Meetings can also be scheduled in advance through Google Calendar.

Note that Google Meet is a separate product to 'Classic Hangouts', which only allows video calls for up to 10 participants.

To use Google Meet:

  • Visit https://meet.google.com/ in your Chrome or Firefox web browser
  • Install the Hangouts Meet app on your iOS or Android device
  • When creating a Google Calendar event, choose Add Conferencing and select Google Meet
