"I graduated from the department approaching 2 years ago, having completed a MEng Electronic Engineering degree (with foundation year). I always had a desire to complete a PhD but did not have the confidence to do so when I graduated, therefore I went straight into industry.

The MEng course for me was a stepping stone in my confidence level, progressing from a BEng and feeling satisfied that I could complete the course. I always live by the saying ‘It’s better to try and fail than to have never have tried at all’, this came from my grandfather who fought in the Second World War. The MEng course exposed me to working in a team environment, focusing on specific not varied topics and putting the skills I had been taught over the previous 4 years into practice. I believe the MEng course enables students to put what they have learnt into more realistic environments for industry whilst also continuing to learn through more focussed subjects. Therefore appealing to both industry and academia.

There are many advantages of completing a master’s degree such as being noticed during an application process against other graduates who have completed a BEng, already ticking off a major section of your portfolio towards becoming a chartered engineer and especially from my point of view, already having completed my master’s degree to be able to apply for a PhD."
