International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia

News | Posted on Monday 5 May 2025

17 May is International day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. This year’s theme is 'The power of communities'.

International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia is a global initiative that aims to raise awareness about discrimination, violence, and challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community.

Community event and drop-in

Friday 16 May, 12 noon to 2pm, Church Lane CL/A/023X

Please join us to reflect and consider how we can work together to challenge injustice and organise for equality. All LGBTQ+ staff, students and allies are welcome. Refreshments will be provided.

We will produce a piece of wall art capturing LGBTQ+ staff and student strengths, hopes, opportunities, worries, and actions. Please bring any photos, images, text, slogans, prose, poetry or anything else you'd like to use, or create something on the day. We’ll have pens, glue and scissors so that you can attach your images and text to the collage. The finished piece will be presented to the VC at the Pride Flag-Raising event on Wednesday 4 June.

Members of the staff Rainbow Alliance and the Student Union LGBTQ+ Network will be in attendance if you'd like to join.

This drop-in will also provide an opportunity to meet other LGBTQ+ staff and students, learn how to report harassment, bullying and hate incidents at the University and find out what the University is doing to support our LGBTQ+ staff and student community.

University of York Trade Unions will be there to provide some real time advice and guidance about utilising the power of the community - how can LGBTQ+ people have constructive conversations with those in power and get heard.

This event is sponsored by UNISON and UCU, who are providing refreshments, and information about joining a Trade Union will be available.

The York SU LGBTQ+ Network is a student group which helps LGBTQ+ students get to know each other with discussions, relaxed meetings, and opportunities to get involved with events like York Pride. Be a visible ally

Sometimes it’s the little things that help us to foster a more inclusive campus environment. By wearing a rainbow lanyard or a pronoun sticker on your staff/student ID badge, you can show your support for our trans and non-binary community, signalling inclusivity and helping others to feel comfortable to do the same. You can also include your pronouns (eg he/him/his) on your email signature as a practical way of enabling others to know how you wish to be addressed.
