
AHRC studentships
- For home and EU applicants at taught MA and PhD level
The AHRC has awarded the university a Block Grant of PhD and MA awards. To date, the History of Art department has been able to offer three PhD and two MA studentships. The application deadline for 2012/13 awards is 2nd March 2012. Full details on the application process can be viewed on the university's postgraduate scholarship pages.
Please note that you must be holding an offer of a place to study before you are eligible to apply for AHRC funding. Therefore, course applications from those hoping to apply for AHRC funding must be received at least a fortnight in advance of the funding deadline in order to allow the Department time to review applications and issue offers before that date.

Scholarships for MA in Stained Glass Conservation and Heritage Management
- For applicants to the MA in Stained Glass Conservation and Heritage Management
In 2011-12 substantial Headley Trust scholarships will be available for new applicants to this programme.
Applicants must hold an offer for academic study commencing in October 2011 to be eligible to apply. Applicants should supply a CV and a personal statement outlining their reasons for applying to the course (maximum two sides of A4, font size no smaller than 10pt). Applications and enquiries should be directed to Sarah Brown.
Giles Worsley travel fellowship
- For architectural historians at PhD level
The fellowship will be awarded to an architect or architectural historian who will spend three months (October to December) at the British School at Rome studying an architectural topic of their choice. Travel, accommodation and board, and a monthly stipend of £700 will be provided.
Each fellow will be required to deliver a public presentation to a general audience on their return.
Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain scholarships
- For applicants and current full-time PhD students
Society members may apply for various scholarships offered by SAHGB. Applicants should either be about to commence, or currently undertaking, full-time PhD research.

Il Circolo scholarships
- For current taught MA and PhD students
Scholarships from the Italian Cultural Association are available for postgraduate students currently undertaking research in fields related to aspects of Italian culture.
Society for Renaissance Studies study fellowships
- For current PhD students
Each year the Society for Renaissance Studies invites applications for Study Fellowships to support travel or, in exceptional circumstances, other research expenses for projects undertaken in connection with doctoral theses in the field of Renaissance Studies. British-Italian Society: Rooke Memorial Prizes
The British-Italian Society (BIS), in conjunction with the Society for Italian Studies (SIS), is pleased to announce the return of the Rooke Memorial Prizes, a competition aimed at raising the profile of Italian Studies at British Universities.
Prizes to the value of £1,000 will be offered as follows:
(a) Undergraduate
Two prizes of £250 each either for a final-year essay (2,500 to 5,000 words) or for a dissertation (5,000 to 10,000 words), submitted by a final-year undergraduate student graduating in summer 2011;
(b) Postgraduate
£500 for an MA dissertation or part (typically a chapter) of an MPhil or PhD thesis (10 to 20,000 words). The dissertation or chapter should have been completed either in 2010 or 2011.Full details may be viewed on the Society for Italian Studies website.
Departmental MA studentship
- For all full-time MA in History of Art (taught) and pathway degree applicants
The Department is offering a studentship to meet tutorial fees at the rate for Home/EU students commencing in 2012-13. Overseas students may also apply for this award, but the award would equate to a partial fee-waiver in their case.
Further to your formal application to the Department, you should submit a personal statement of not more than 500 words, including a proposal for a dissertation topic which briefly demonstrates its potential for doctoral research. The deadline for applications, to be submitted to the Postgraduate Administrator, is 2 March 2012.
In order to be eligible to apply for this competition you must already be holding an offer of a place on the taught MA or a pathway degree programme.
MA Overseas Studentship
- For all overseas full-time MA in History of Art (taught) and pathway degree applicants
The Department is offering one studentship, equivalent to a partial fee-waiver (£5,000), for an overseas student commencing in 2012-13. Further to your formal application to the Department, you should submit a personal statement of not more than 500 words, including a proposal for a dissertation topic which briefly demonstrates its potential for doctoral research.
The deadline for applications, to be submitted to the Postgraduate Administrator, is 30 April 2012.
In order to be eligible to apply for this competition you must already be holding an offer of a place on the taught MA or a pathway degree programme.
MA Partnership Studentships
- For all full-time MA in History of Art (taught) and pathway degree applicants
The Department is sometimes able to offer studentships to full-time MA students in collaboration with project partners. A recent competition saw two studentships amounting to fee-waivers (at the rate for home students) being offered, one in collaboration with York Art Gallery, and another with the Yorkshire Museum. Future competitions will be advertised here, as they arise.
PhD Overseas & EU Studentships
- For all overseas and EU full-time PhD applicants
The Department is offering two studentships, equivalent to a partial fee-waiver, one for an overseas student (£4,400) and one for an EU student (£1,000), commencing in 2012-13. These awards are renewable for up to two further years of registration, subject to satisfactory progress.
The deadline for applicants to register their interest in being considered for an award, via the Postgraduate Administrator, is 30 April 2012. The awards will be allocated on the basis of the programme applications already submitted by applicants, so no further paperwork is required from those wishing to be considered.
In order to be eligible to register to be considered for this competition you must already be holding an offer of a place on the PhD programme.
Scholarship for overseas students
- For overseas applicants at taught MA and PhD level
Applicants of any nationality outside the European Union may apply for these scholarships, which provide a one-third or one-sixth tuition fee waiver. Applications are evaluated on the basis of academic merit and financial need.
Overseas continuation scholarship
- For current overseas MA students applying to continue on to study at PhD level at York
The University of York will award ten overseas continuation scholarships to current overseas MA students at York who continue on to a PhD. Each award offers a partial fee waiver of £5000 for the first year of the PhD only.
Overseas research studentships
- For overseas applicants at PhD level
Six studentships are available for overseas PhD applicants. The award covers a full overseas tuition fee waiver and a contribution to living expenses.
Direct Loans
- For US applicants
The University of York is certified to receive Direct Loans, and many forms of private loans enable students to fund their study.
