Ordinance 18: Congregations (Graduation ceremonies)

18.1 In accordance with Article 8 of the Charter, the University will hold Congregations (Graduation Ceremonies) for the purpose of conferring degrees on graduates of the University, including honorary graduates.

18.2 Congregations will be held at least once every year, presided over by the Chancellor, or in the absence of the Chancellor, by any one of:

  1. a Pro-Chancellor
  2. the Vice-Chancellor and President; or in the absence of roles (1) and (2)
  3. any other senior member of staff as shall be nominated by the Vice-Chancellor and President.

18.3 Congregations are normally by means of a congregation taking place in a physical venue, but may be held on a virtual and mixed physical and virtual basis where expedient to do so.

18.4 Graduands are required to notify the University whether they intend to attend the Congregation, but may be awarded their degree in absentia if unable to attend a Congregation.

18.5 Graduands attending a Congregation of the University for the conferment of degrees or granting of other awards are required to wear the dress prescribed for the occasion.
