FWW Research Theme Leads James Chong & Liz Rylott

The Sustainable Food research theme has been expanded to the Food, Water and Waste research theme, to reflect the pressing environmental issues that humanity faces, as well as building on key academic strengths in this area at York.

James is a Professor in the Department of Biology and his research uses multi-omics and computational approaches to understand microbial community dynamics. Such communities are utilised in processes such as anaerobic digestion (AD) where his work aims to improve and optimise the recovery of resources from organic waste. He was previously lead for YESI's Waste and Resource Use Network.
"I'm really looking forward to working with Liz Rylott to promote strong interdisciplinary interactions within the university and with external stakeholders around the key YESI challenges of Food, Water and Waste." James Chong
Liz is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Biology. Her research is focused on developing plants to remediate pollution and recover value from waste. Liz has worked with a variety of formats: radio, digital, comics, in-person, to successfully engage a broad range of stakeholders with her research.
"I’m itching to get started in this role. The strengths, reach and goodwill of Yorkshire stakeholders relevant to this Food, Water and Waste YESI theme pack a powerful punch. Helping to bring these groups together through YESI is a thrilling prospect!" Liz Rylott

We look forward to the fresh ideas and thinking that the new Research Themes co-leads will bring to YESI and the environmental challenges the world faces.
