Introducing Our New Interdisciplinary Research Training Programme!

Unlock the Power of Interdisciplinary Research for Environmental Sustainability through a new training programme supported by Research England Enhancing Research Culture funding!

Join us for an enriching journey, open to University of York (UoY) academics, that will transform your approach to research and collaboration. Our problem-based learning workshops and training programme offers several benefits aimed at enhancing research culture and fostering interdisciplinary excellence:

  • Gain New Insights and Strategies: Challenge and dispel disciplinary biases and stereotypes by focusing on shared values as a basis for building inclusive and equitable solutions.
  • Develop a Common Language: Acquire essential communication tools to facilitate seamless dialogue across the natural sciences, sciences, the arts and humanities disciplines.
  • Navigate Interdisciplinarity with Confidence: Learn how to tackle interdisciplinary environmental sustainability challenges at every stage of the research process and effectively evaluate and communicate interdisciplinary findings.
  • Explore Institutional Support: Discover the wealth of opportunities and support available for interdisciplinary environmental sustainability research at the University of York, aligning with the Universities research strategy and sustainability plan.
  • Mentorship Opportunities: Engage in mentorship programmes to both receive guidance from experienced interdisciplinary researchers and mentor subsequent cohorts undertaking this training.
  • Funding opportunity: Over a series of  training sessions you and your team will have the chance to identify, design and develop an interdisciplinary environmental sustainability research project that you can pitch to a Dragons’ Den style panel to receive pump-priming funding for your idea.

Who Should Attend?

Researchers across all Faculties, will benefit from this programme, while the entire University of York community also stands to gain indirectly from the enriched research culture fostered by this initiative.

We particularly target UoY researchers who:

  • hold a PhD or equivalent qualification
  • have a track record of published work
  • are eligible to lead research grants according to their contractual arrangements

Application Assessment Criteria

  • Places will be allocated to ensure as equitable an approach as possible in terms of disciplinary expertise
  • Priority will be given to mid-career and established researchers, though Early Career Researchers who are eligible to lead research grants are also welcome to apply

Building on Success

Drawing from lessons learned in our pilot training course in January 2024, we will continuously refine and optimise our programme to ensure maximum impact. Participants will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of legacy resources and become mentors for future cohorts, ensuring the sustainability of this invaluable initiative.
