Postgraduate research funding for UK (home) students

We offer scholarships, bursaries and other funding to help you with tuition fees and living expenses.

Types of funding

Government schemes, like Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs) and Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs), are the main sources of financial support for postgraduate researchers. We award over £7m of funding each year through UK Research and Innovation (ukri.org).

UK Government loans

You may be entitled to a postgraduate loan to help fund your studies.

Funding for students with disabilities

If you have a mental health problem, long-term illness or any other disability, you may be eligible for additional financial support.

Collaborative ESRC White Rose Social Sciences DTP (WR DTP) Scholarships

The Economic and Social Research Council White Rose Social Sciences Doctoral Training Partnership is a collaboration across the social sciences at the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield, York, Bradford, Sheffield Hallam, Hull and Manchester Metropolitan.

  • Funding: ESRC stipend (£17,668 in 2022/23) plus full fee waiver
  • Application deadline: Monday 13 March 2023, 5pm GMT
  • Open to: International (including EU) and UK (home) students

BBSRC White Rose DTP (WR DTP) in Mechanistic Biology

This prestigious Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council-funded Doctoral Training Partnership and its strategic application brings together world-class molecular and cellular bioscience centres at the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York.

  • Funding: A tax-free annual stipend at the standard UKRI rate (£17,668 for 2022/23 entry), research costs and tuition fees at UK rate
  • Application deadline: Sunday 8 January 2023, 11.59pm GMT
  • Open to: International (including EU) and UK (home) students

BBSRC White Rose DTP (WR DTP) in Mechanistic Biology: Diverse Talent Scholarships

The White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) is committed to creating a more diverse and inclusive environment within its postgraduate research programme. We encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply for a fully-funded PhD scholarship as part of the White Rose DTP.

  • Funding: A tax-free annual stipend at the standard UKRI rate (£17,668 for 2022/23 entry), research costs and tuition fees at UK rate
  • Open to: UK (home) students

ESRC White Rose Social Sciences DTP (WR DTP) Scholarships

NERC DTP in Adapting to the Challenges of a Changing Environment (ACCE)

This prestigious Natural Environment Research Council-funded Doctoral Training Partnership brings together the very best in environmental, ecological and evolutionary research from the Departments of Biology, Environment & Geography, Archaeology and Chemistry,

  • Funding: A tax-free annual stipend at the standard UKRI (£17,668 for 2022/23 entry), research costs and tuition fees at UK rate
  • Application deadline: Friday 13 January 2023, 11.59pm GMT
  • Open to: International (including EU) and UK (home) students

York Graduate Research School (YGRS) PhD Scholarships

We're pleased to offer up to six fully-funded PhD scholarships for UK candidates who self-identify as being from a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME) background.

  • Funding: Tuition fees at UK (home) rate; UKRI-aligned stipend; research training support grant
  • Open to: UK (home) students
