York Students in Schools

York Students in Schools connects students from the University of York with local schools. It is an award winning scheme which was first set up by students in 1994. Each year hundreds of students make a difference to the lives of young people across York, whilst building skills and experience for the future.

So join in this year - there are roles and levels of commitment to suit almost every student and timetable.

Applications have now closed for Autumn Term. Here's a taste of what's coming up in Spring Term:

‌Classroom Assistant: Summer Term

Gain classroom experience and inspire others by offering help with a specific subject, 1:1 reading, special educational needs or general classroom support. Roles available in nursery, primary, secondary and further education.

Block Placement

Gain an in-depth look into the teaching profession by volunteering for a full-time, one week placement in the first week of the Easter vacation. Fantastic experience for students interested in applying for a teacher training course or working with young people.

Language and Culture Support

Share your language skills with young people by giving language and culture taster sessions, or offering language support in schools. Sign up to our language support register to be contacted with relevant opportunities.

Student Management Group

If you enjoyed your YSIS placement, why not become a Student Manager to help support other students volunteering in schools. Gain key leadership skills by helping to run the York Students in Schools programme and sharing your experience at events.
