Charity Volunteering

The Volunteering Team advertises roles on behalf of a wide range of charities and community organisations across York each term, who are looking for help from students.

You can volunteer to support local charities to help make a difference in York, all whilst getting to know the community you’re studying in and enhancing your CV. It’s also a great way to try out different sectors, to see which career is right for you.

Covid-19 update: Volunteer roles are all checked to be in line with current social distancing guidance and with Covid-secure measures in place. We also have an increased number of remote volunteer opportunities this term.

We are accepting new volunteer roles from organisations across York throughout term. Find a full list of our opportunities and apply on Handshake.

Roles are open to any student and the commitment varies between roles from a regular time each week to a one-off event, so there is lots of flexibility to find a role to suit your timetable. Find roles across a range of sectors and causes such as:

  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Social justice
  • Arts and Heritage
  • Sustainability

About Charity Volunteering

Charity volunteering is a brokerage service between charities in York and students at the University of York. It is managed by the Student Volunteering Team based in Careers and Placements.

All charities promoted via the scheme have a partnership agreement in place with the University of York. We work with charities to develop roles which will be beneficial for them and the student volunteers. Each year around 600 student volunteers apply to roles with around 50 organisations.
