Graduation: exceptional heat advice

Exceptional heat is currently affecting a large part of England.

The UK Health Security Agency has issued a Level 4 Heat Health Alert. This level of alert is used when a heatwave is so severe and/or prolonged that its effects extend outside the health and social care system. At this level, illness may occur among the fit and healthy, and not just in high-risk groups.

Safety measures

The health and safety of our graduates, guests and staff is our highest priority.

The graduation ceremonies will carry on as planned, although we have taken a number of measures to reduce the heat risks including using air conditioning units and providing extra drinking water. All security and reception staff across campus are first aid trained and additional staff have been brought in for the event to assist the comfort and safety of guests. Additional rooms are available on campus where guests may watch the ceremony if necessary.

We may need to make further adjustments on the day, and we will keep you up to date as the day progresses.

Keeping cool if you’re attending graduation ceremonies

  • Dress for the hot weather and consider light, loose fabrics that will help keep you cool
  • Try to keep out of direct sun between 11am and 3pm, and walk in the shade where possible
  • Apply sunscreen regularly and bring a wide-brimmed hat or umbrella and a handheld fan if you have one
  • Bring plenty of water with you to stay hydrated throughout the day

Further information on keeping safe in extreme heat is included in the Government publication Beat the heat: staying safe in hot weather.

If you are clinically vulnerable, feeling unwell or need additional support, please make yourself known to a member of staff at the information desk in Spring Lane Building on arrival.

Travel disruption

We are aware that travel is being disrupted on some routes, so we advise all guests to plan ahead when travelling to campus. Network Rail has advised people to avoid rail travel across England and Wales on Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 July 2022 and blanket speed restrictions across England and Wales expected from 12-8pm on both days are likely to cause delays.

  • If travel delays result in graduands arriving late, you should inform a member of staff at the information desk in the Spring Lane Building
  • If you miss your ceremony entirely, we will try to get you into the next available ceremony
  • If you're unable to get to York at all, please contact graduation@york.ac.uk
