Fancy broadening your knowledge and studying a module from a different department or school in Semester 2?

On many programmes at York, you have the opportunity to step outside your subject by taking a module from a different department or school. We call these ‘elective modules’. Studying an elective module lets you broaden your knowledge, make new academic connections and boost your employability.

Applications to study an elective module in Semester 2 open on Wednesday 10 December 2025 (after the timetable for semester 2 has been released).

Types of elective module

There are three kinds of elective module:

  • General elective modules
Explore modules from a wide range of departments under various themes, including people and society, thinking and the mind, tech of the future and social challenges.
  • York Interdisciplinary Modules (YIMs) (open to undergraduates only for semester 2)
Work collaboratively to apply your expertise to solve local, regional and global sustainability challenges and learn from students and staff from other disciplines.
  • York Language Electives (YLEs)
Broaden your horizons and deepen your knowledge of different cultures with a language elective. You can choose from a wide range of language modules available at different levels of study in languages including Arabic, Chinese, Classical Latin, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Medieval Latin and Spanish.

Before you apply

  • It is important that you check with your home department whether your programme of study allows you to take an elective module in Semester 2
  • You should also check your timetable before applying to make sure the proposed module doesn’t clash with your existing schedule - see how to do this on our studying beyond your department web page.

If you’re unsure if you can apply for an elective module or you find a timetable clash, please contact your home department. You can find your departmental contact in the FAQs on our electives web page.
