Hidden disabilities and sunflower lanyards

Posted on 10 November 2021

It is estimated that 1 in 5 people in the UK have a disability and 80% of these people have a hidden disability.

Hidden disabilities include:

  • learning differences (dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism)
  • mental health
  • speech
  • visual or hearing impairments
  • asthma and other lung conditions
  • chronic illnesses such as diabetes

Living with a hidden disability can affect each person in different ways and can be painful, exhausting, and isolating. Some individuals who feel comfortable indicating they have a hidden disability may decide to wear a Sunflower lanyard to indicate that they may need additional support, help or a little more time.

We have a supply of the lanyards on campus that can be collected by students from all College Receptions and members of staff from the Security Centre and Vanbrugh Reception in the Information Centre.
