Could you make your mark as a mentor (STYM)?

Posted on 25 February 2018

Apply now to take part in our Second and Third Year Mentoring Scheme (STYM).

Be a college mentor (STYM)

Following a successful pilot in Langwith and Derwent Colleges, our Second and Third Year Mentoring Scheme (STYM) for undergraduate students will be rolled out across all colleges from this September. A student mentor scheme for postgraduate students will also be rolled out in September, and this will be advertised in due course.

The scheme, developed collaboratively by colleges and YUSU, gives every new student access to a Student Mentor when they arrive in the autumn and beyond. STYMs will help each student to feel a real part of their college community, to build friendships, and to feel supported in the transition to their new studies.

The role includes:

  • Meeting new students during Welcome Week
  • Providing information about what to do on campus
  • Sharing your tips on the best places to visit in town
  • Giving advice on managing student life throughout the first year including accessing support services and making the most of University resources
