Getting started

Welcome to our research staff community which consists of around 600 individuals who are primarily engaged in research this includes postdocs, research fellows, research assistants, technicians and teaching fellows. During your time here you will be contributing to the excellent research reputation that York holds. Research excellence defines York and we will support you in further strengthening and improving your research, to be dynamic, inspirational and life‑changing in its impact.

The University has 3 research faculties: Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Humanities and Faculty of Social Sciences which collectively consists of over 30 departments and research centres. Your department and departmental research administrator along with your PI/supervisor/line manager will be your most important points of contact.

To get your research journey off to a good start here at York there are number of things you will need to consider:

Setting expectations: Are you clear on what is expected of you? See information on setting targets  Research planning: Have you discussed and agreed with your PI/line manager a set of aims/ objectives and timescale for your research project? 

Career planning: Have you set some career objectives? What career path are you aiming for?
Read the Concordat to support the career development of researchers

Forward planning: What do you want to achieve in your time at York?- how are you going to do this, what help do you need? Networking: Have you identified who you need to speak to and can help you with your forward planning? Think about your online presence and become a networked researcher  Research training: identify any training/support needed to achieve your research objectives.
