Our HR teams provide specialist support and guidance across the University. Use this page to find out about the work each team does and how to contact them.

Compliance Team

Ensuring the University meets the requirements of legislation.

The Compliance Team ensures compliance with UK legislation and deals primarily with right to work and work permission issues and supports our systems and processes for the hiring, management and payment of casual workers.

A centre of advice and guidance on equality, diversity and inclusion matters.

  • Act as a centre for advice and guidance on equality, diversity and inclusion matters.
  • Provide advice to faculties/departments, services and committees.
  • Provide publicity, promotion, engagement and events for staff networks and forums.

HR Director's Office

Supporting the Director of HR and the HR Leadership Team.

Staff in the HR Director's office work closely to support members of the HR Leadership Team in their everyday work and with projects.

Our senior management team.

The Department is currently led by Rachael Millhouse, Director of Human Resources.

Assisted by Susan Kane and Helen Selvidge, the HR leadership team identify our strategic goals and oversee our efforts to meet them.

The HR Director's Office provides administrative support to the team.

HR Operations (including HR Advisers)

Support for people managers from our HR Advisers and Officers.

The HR Operations team support staff and managers with issues such as:

  • departmental restructuring
  • people management issues such as disciplinary, managing ill health, capability and grievance redundancy situations
  • overseas working and hybrid working queries
  • matters relating to employment law.

Every department has the support of a team of HR practitioners.

Our casework service agreement outlines the roles and responsibilities of line managers and HR colleagues when working together to address issues under HR procedures.

HR Services are your first port of call for any general HR issues, including:

Occupational Health

Supporting and preventing ill-health.

Occupational Health work to:

  • minimise the risk of ill-health as a result of work
  • find ways to allow people to work despite health problems or disability
  • to promote a healthy and productive workforce

Pensions information and administration.

The Pensions Team administer the University of York Pension Fund and the membership of staff in the USS, NHS Pensions and The People's Pension.

The Programmes Office support the planning and implementation of HR strategic projects. The team also lead on HR communications.

Safety, Health, and Wellbeing at Work Office

The Safety, Health, and Wellbeing at Work Office provides an impartial and independent institutional-wide advisory and assurance service on all aspects of workplace health and safety within the University.
