Heatwave and campus environment
Posted on Tuesday 23 June 2026
We are aware that the UK Health Security Agency has issued an amber heat-health alert for Yorkshire and Humber. This level of alert indicates that the heatwave has escalated in severity and duration.
Staff comfort and wellbeing are a priority in light of the exceptional heat that is being experienced across campus. We encourage staff to speak to their line manager about the appropriate ways of working, which may include making alternative travel arrangements, utilising different spaces on campus, or working from home if this is possible and provides a cooler environment this week.
For those of you who are required/coming onto campus to work during the heatwave:
- Dress for the hot weather and consider light, loose fabrics that will help keep you cool
- Try to keep out of direct sun between 11am and 3pm, and walk in the shade where possible
- Take regular breaks
- Apply sunscreen regularly and bring a wide-brimmed hat or umbrella and a handheld fan if you have one
- Stay hydrated throughout the day, and utilise the water fountains and drinking facilities across campus
Further information on keeping safe in extreme heat at work or at home is included in the government publication Beat the heat: staying safe in hot weather. The Safety, Health and Wellbeing at Work Office have also provided warm weather advice for staff in their June Health & Safety Round Up and are recommending that you follow the NHS advice for how to cope in hot weather.
Our Estates team is working hard to maximise ventilation and keep the buildings on campus as comfortable as possible.
We acknowledge that many roles require a presence on campus to keep activities and operations running. We want to extend a thank you to all colleagues who are on-site this week with these challenging conditions.
