Maria Bourboulis International Masters Scholarship
The Maria Bourboulis scholarship is awarded each year to an International Master student, in memory of University of York alumna, Maria Bourboulis. For 2026/27, the scholarship will be offered to a student studying with the Department of Sociology.

Scholarship details
The Maria Bourboulis scholarship fund is a legacy gift from York alumna, Maria Bourboulis. Maria graduated from York in 1989 and felt that the University gave her a great foundation for her professional life. She left a legacy gift in her Will to help other International students benefit from the opportunities she had.
Maria studied Social Work at York and each year one scholarship is awarded to a Masters student in either the School of Business and Society or the Department of Sociology. For 2026/27, the scholarship will be offered to a student studying with the Department of Sociology.

Eligibility
Open to International (including EU) and International (non-EU) students.
In order to be eligible you must also have an offer for a place on one of the following courses:
- Social Research (MA)
- Criminology (MA)
- Social Media and Social Research (MA)
- Social Media and Interactive Technologies
- Social Media and Management (MSc)
- Global Culture and Society (MA)
- Women's and Gender Studies (MA)
- Women, Violence and Conflict (MA)
You must:
- apply for a place on a full-time Masters course with the Department of Sociology
- begin your Masters studies in September 2026 (it is not possible to defer a scholarship offer)
- have or expect to obtain a first or upper second-class honours degree or equivalent prior to commencing the Masters programme.
If English is not your first language, you should also read the English Language requirements for postgraduate study.
How to apply
Application deadline: Tuesday 30 June 2026, 4pm BST
- Submit an application for your preferred Masters programme with the Department of Sociology through the University's online system. You can do this from the relevant course page. Or, learn more about how to apply for a Masters at York.
- You must also provide a 200 word statement about the usefulness of the scholarship in order to achieve your goals. After submitting your Masters application, please email your 200 word statement to: sociology-pgt-admin@york.ac.uk.
How we allocate
To honour the memory of Maria Bourboulis, preference will be given to a Greek student - as per Maria's wishes - but the scholarship is open to all International students.
Terms and conditions
The successful candidate will be sent a formal letter confirming the offer of the scholarship. This letter will set out the value and duration of the award and asks the candidate to accept the Terms of the Scholarship.
For scholarships with stipends
Award holders receive the balance as a cash bursary that will be paid directly into their bank account.
For all scholarships and studentships
Continued receipt of all scholarship is conditional upon satisfactory academic progress. Scholarship holders should notify their Department in the following circumstances:
- you take leave of absence
- you change your programme of study
- your registration changes, eg full time to part time
- you withdraw from your programme.
