Professor Martin O’Neill, from the Department of Philosophy, and Professor Daniel Muzio, from the School for Business and Society, joins a new cohort of distinguished social scientists whose work has made a lasting impact.

The Fellowship is composed of 1,700 leading figures from across academia, the public, private and third sectors, all of whom are being recognised for the excellence and influence of their work.

Achievements

Professor Martin O’Neill is Professor of Political Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy and has been specifically recognised for his achievements in bridging the gap between the Humanities and the Social Sciences.

His research focuses on the fundamental issues of equality, democracy and economic justice. By connecting political philosophy with empirical social science, his work provides a framework for understanding how philosophical principles can be applied to real-world societal structures and public policies.

Professor Daniel Muzio is Professor of Management in the School for Business and Society and has been recognised for his research that examines the landscape of professional and knowledge-intensive occupations, such as law and management consultancy.

His work analyses how the "triple threat" of globalisation, technological disruption and regulatory reform is reshaping the nature of expertise and the governance of professional work. Professor Muzio is also the founding chair of the Organisation and Management Editors Network (OMEN), a professional network dedicated to improving editorial policies and practices in management and business studies.

Excellence

The Academy’s Fellowship recognises researchers whose work has shown excellence and the ability to address some of the major challenges facing communities, economies and society today.

The 74 new Fellows in this spring's cohort cover disciplines ranging from climate change adaptation to ethical issues in global security. Together they represent 39 UK organisations as well as several international institutions.

Will Hutton FAcSS, President of the Academy of Social Sciences, said: “I’m delighted to welcome these leading social scientists to the Academy’s Fellowship this spring. Their substantial contributions have furthered knowledge and our understanding in tackling a wide range of societal challenges. We look forward to working with them to further promote the important role the social sciences play in our daily lives.”
