News

Posted on Wednesday 3 January 2024

The University will host YorkTalks, with experts delivering free short talks on research across a range of topics, including the ‘death’ of the pub, the ethics of artificial intelligence, and spirituality in popular music.
Attendees can book tickets for any number of sessions during the day-long event

The event, which includes sixteen talks throughout the day, grouped into four sessions, will take place on Wednesday, 10 January at the Piazza Building at the University’s Campus East.

2024 marks the tenth anniversary of the popular research showcase and focuses on the impact that York research has on different elements of daily life, in the past, present, and future.

Highlights include how the ‘local pub’ faces a fight for survival and the ways in which communities can help them to evolve and flourish again. Other topics include unlocking the language barrier between scientists and doctors, rethinking schizophrenia, the impact of county lines drug networks, and the ethics of artificial intelligence in healthcare.

Inspire

Professor Matthias Ruth, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research at the University of York, said: “In 15-minute engaging, visual, and accessible talks, our researchers will provide insights and knowledge about our curiosity-driven research and its role at the heart of our mission as a university for public good.

“It really is a great way to kick-start the New Year, whether you attend one session or the whole day, as it is sure to inspire and get people talking.”

Spotlight

Research students will also be showcasing their work throughout the day in the PhD Research Spotlight Competition. They will be on hand at their exhibitions to answer any questions that attendees have.

The day runs from 9.30am to 5pm and you can attend the whole day or a single session by booking free tickets. Explore the full programme via the YorkTalks web pages.
