University scholarship scheme to support students from Middle East

Posted on 4 September 2023

The University of York has partnered with the Saïd Foundation to provide fully-funded scholarships to students from the Middle East.

The University of York is a partner of the Saïd Foundation scholarship scheme

The scholarship scheme supports outstanding individuals from Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine who are looking to study for a Masters degree in the UK.

Empower people

The scholarship programme aims to empower people through educational opportunities and is targeted towards individuals who demonstrate the potential to become leaders and drivers of change within the target countries of Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine.

Scholarships are being offered for one-year Masters degree courses with no restrictions on academic subjects; candidates must demonstrate that their subject will enable them to contribute to the development of their home country.

Leadership potential

Applicants should hold Syrian, Jordanian, Lebanese or Palestinian nationality and be permanently resident in one of these countries, although the Foundation will consider Syrians residing elsewhere due to current circumstances in the country.

The scheme also requires that candidates have work and/or voluntary experience relevant to their field of study and a clear career plan that demonstrates leadership potential in their chosen field.

Exciting step forward

Professor Tracy Lightfoot, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Teaching, Learning and Students, said: “We are dedicated to finding new ways to support students to achieve their potential, wherever they are from in the world, and our partnership with the Saïd Foundation is an exciting step forward in identifying the next generation of leaders to create positive societal change.”

Catherine Thomé, CEO at Saïd Foundation said: “We are delighted to welcome the University of York as a valued university partner. Our scholars from the Levant region will be able to benefit from the world-class teaching and research offered by the University as well as enjoying the beautiful historic city of York.”
