The University of York will celebrate the 2017 Lunar Year of the Rooster at the York Chinese New Year Gala next week.

Hosted at the York Barbican on Friday 3 February, the annual Gala will feature songs, folk dances, acrobatics, martial art and orchestra performances from over 100 students.

Organised by the Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA), the Gala is one of the biggest student events and last year attracted 900 students.

This year, the Lord Mayor of York and the Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire will attend.

Starting at 6.00pm with a Chinese Spring Festival food buffet, 13 performances will run from 7.00pm – 9.30pm.

Ling Ge, Chair of the CSSA York and A Doctoral Researcher in York’s Department of Social Policy and Social Work, said: “The annual Chinese New Year Gala has become a highlight of the Spring Festival tradition at the University of York.

“The 2017 event will be a special celebration heralding the Lunar Year of Rooster and we bet you will be impressed by the artistry and beauty of our performances highlighting ancient China to the new generation. Everyone is welcome to join us in celebrating an unforgettable night!”
