An annual nationwide competition to find the best University Brass Band in the UK returns this month.

UniBrass, the University Brass Band Championship organised by students at the University of York, will take place on 18 February at the Harrogate International Centre.

Now in its seventh year, over 650 students from 19 university brass bands across the UK will compete to be crowned University Champion Band.

As well as the main contest, local band Tewit Youth Brass Band will perform during the results ceremony ahead of a gala concert performed by the Cory Band - the world’s number one ranked brass band.

Andy Straiton, Committee Chair and a third year chemistry student, said: “UniBrass grows in size and reputation each year, with bands delivering an innovative and entertaining programme to impress the audience and adjudicators.

“UniBrass is organised by a team of eleven students from the University of York who organise this massive event alongside their studies. Whilst it has not been without its challenges, the group have worked together to put on one of the biggest student-led events in the country in an international standard venue.

“It has been thoroughly rewarding working as part of a team of friends to put on an event that we have so thoroughly enjoyed in the past. We are very proud that the University of York Brass Band is hosting the event and hope to make it the best one yet!”

UniBrass starts at 11am on Saturday 18 February at the Harrogate International Centre. For tickets, visit: unib.co.uk/tickets.
