York open day lifts lid on distance learning

Encompassing Astronomy, Creative Writing, Parish Church Studies, Railway Studies and the Geology of Yorkshire and Northern England, all CLL programmes are delivered online on a part-time basis using the University's Virtual Learning Environment. This ensures they are an ideal way for those with busy schedules to return to learn.

Taking place on campus from 10am – 12pm, the annual Open Day will provide opportunities to meet tutors leading the programmes, experience a short class, and find out more about what distance learning and part-time study is all about. Refreshments will also be provided for the concluding Q&A session.

Iain Barr, Learning Enhancement Manager who oversees distance learning at the CLL, said: “We’re delighted to offer these higher level programmes on behalf of the University, and feel that it is important for students to get a taste for what’s involved before they register.

“Distance learning has changed beyond recognition in recent years and is now a highly interactive experience, so as well as showcasing the programmes, we are keen to dispel some of the myths of studying online and move away from the image of the lonely student working in isolation.”

Sarah Speight, a current student on the Postgraduate Creative Writing course said: “The practice of writing is interwoven with theory and literature to support and enhance our development as writers - I now have a clearer picture of my strengths and weaknesses, my writing voice and style, and my approach.

“As a working mother, the online aspect of the course has provided the flexibility I need. What I didn’t expect was how much we would bond as a group; we have built a crucial support network for each other, which we plan to continue!’
