Chance to enjoy a ‘Pint of Science’ at York pubs

The 15 York scientists are among around 270 academics from across the country swapping the laboratory for a public house from 19 to 21 May as part of Pint of Science 2014, a national science festival.

While Pint of Science is in its second year, this year’s event is a first for York and will take place at Brigantes Bar & Brasserie, the Fulford Arms, and two venues at Stonegate Yard.  

The York events have been organised by a team of University postgraduate student volunteers with guidance from Outreach Officer Katherine Leech, from the University’s Department of Physics.

Katherine Leech said: “The idea behind the festival is simple – down-to-earth talks about science in the relaxed atmosphere of a local pub. Some of the venues are very small, so it is the perfect chance to ask questions and interact with some of York’s top scientists.

“We hope that people who might not go to a science event or talk at the University might come along. On offer is the chance to learn more about the wonders of science and the fascinating research being carried out at York which could change the world we live in.”

This year’s event is based on four themes: ‘Matters of the Mind’, ‘Our Body’, ‘Physics and Engineering’, and ‘Planet Earth’. Talks taking place in York include a discussion of whether we can use MRI scanners to read people’s minds; a session entitled ‘From G&T to TLC – how Chemistry helps you feel better’; and an insight into how a variety of biological worlds from the ant to the immune system, are providing inspiration to robotic engineers.

The York scientists are from a wide spectrum of departments and centres including the Departments of Biology, Physics, Archaeology, Psychology, Chemistry, Electronics, and the Stockholm Environment Institute.
