York students encouraged to nominate top landlords

Posted on 7 October 2014

Students at the University of York have the opportunity to nominate landlords in the inaugural Good Landlord Awards, a student-led scheme which seeks to recognise and celebrate the best in student landlordship in the city.

Run by York’s Student Community Partnership, a long-standing project between York City Council and all four of York’s Higher Education (HE) institutions, students have until Friday 10 October to nominate landlords who they feel go above and beyond to deliver an excellent experience for their tenants.

Students can nominate their landlord in one of seven categories: Best Quality Property of the Year, Best Value for Money of the Year, Most Responsive Landlord of the Year, Landlord of the Year – Smaller and Larger Student Properties, Managing Agent of the Year and Outstanding Service Award.

Taking place during York Housing Week, nominations will be considered by a panel of student representatives from each participating Student Union. Shortlisted landlords will be notified by 17 October and invited to an awards ceremony on 4 November where the winners will be announced.

Set up to further community engagement between students and landlords in the city, student representatives from across the HE institutions, councillors, dignitaries and members of the Higher York Executive Board will attend the awards ceremony.

Bethan Gibb, YUSU intern and co-ordinator of the scheme, said: “We so often hear about problems between landlords and their tenants, but we wanted to create an opportunity to champion the very best houses, agents and landlords in York, and allow students to say a big thank you for all their hard work.

“Having a great landlord can make all the difference to life when you're moving into private accommodation for the first time without your parents, and the work they do to help you out with contracts, maintenance and bill-paying can make life so much easier. These awards are a great opportunity to let fantastic landlords know that their work is appreciated by their student tenants.”

Students can nominate their landlords online, through the Student Community Partnership webpage
