York graduate’s artwork celebrates 50th anniversary of history department

Posted on 10 November 2014

A University of York graduate has completed a commission from the University’s History Department to produce a piece of art to mark its 50th anniversary.

Anna Gammans, who graduated with a 2:1 in History this summer, will attend a launch to hand over her painting on 12 November at 4.30pm. Professor Stuart Carroll, Head of the Department of History, Dr Catriona Kennedy, Senior Lecturer in Modern History, and Caroline Edwards, History Departmental Manager, will also be in attendance.

Studying history while simultaneously running a small art business through the website annagammansart.co.uk, Anna Gammans aimed to create an artwork reflecting York’s beauty and vibrancy. On 12 November she will hand over a large, colourful piece made using acrylics.

Anna Gammans said: “From start to finish this project has been hugely exciting for me as both an artist and a University of York graduate! I was thrilled to be asked to showcase my work in a department and University which has supported me, and shared my experiences, for three wonderful years. I completely immersed myself in the painting, and I hope that it is a reflection not only of the vibrancy of York as a city, but of my passion and personality too.

“Artistic inspiration is never hard to find in York, the stunning architecture of the city is bursting with its own unique history and culture - something which always complemented my studies in History. Bridging the gap between art and history, between knowledge and its representation, is what this piece represents publicly. For me personally, it also reconciles my two passions.”

Catriona Kennedy, Senior Lecturer in the Department of History and Anna’s final year dissertation supervisor, said: “Anna would often turn up our dissertation supervisions fresh from her studio and splattered in paint! Her ability to combine her studies with her painting was truly impressive - indeed her dissertation, which received a first, was on the visual culture of the French Revolution. Anna's a great example of the talented and interesting students we have in History. Her beautiful and vibrant painting will provide a wonderful finishing touch to the refurbishment of the department and our efforts to create warm and welcoming space for staff and students to share.”

Anna Gammans added: “I am so thrilled that the University organised such an event, and I am so excited to see people’s reactions to my work. I sincerely hope it does the job of brightening up the place for all the remaining students, and of course, the recent newcomers!”
